About the Cause
November is National Homelessness Awareness Month, which includes Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week, November 13 – 21, 2021. This annual program allows people to come together across the country to draw attention to the problems of homelessness and hunger.
According to the 2020 HUD Annual Homeless Assessment Report, homelessness has increased nationwide for the fourth year in a row. And 39% of homeless individuals were in unsheltered locations such as on the street, in abandoned buildings, or in other places not suitable for human habitation. 2020 marks the first time since data collection began that more individuals experiencing homelessness were unsheltered than were sheltered. So the need for services continues to grow locally and nationwide.
Hope House opened its transitional shelter for women and children in 1990 through collaboration with St. Michael’s Church, city leaders, businesses and local citizens. Since then, Hope House has expanded to include rental assistance programs for individuals and families facing homelessness. In 2020, eviction prevention services were added for residents affected by the pandemic.
